 Welcome To Second Grade!

 



Dear Families,
Hello, I hope your child had a wonderful summer and is looking forward to a great school year.  I know I am.  The following pages refer to our classroom schedule, and classroom expectations. We will be discussing the information in class  as well.  If you have any questions after you have read this packet or throughout the year, I encourage you to ask.  It is important to me that your child sees we are communicating and working together.   Also, enclosed is an important information card.  Please fill it out and return it to me.  It will be kept confidential and help me attend to the individual needs of your child. 

This year we will continue to build on skills and routines that were taught in first grade. Following is a quick overview of what we will be covering in second grade.
For math, Second grade completes 8 modules. All of which have a heavy  focus on  fact fluency to 20 and place value strategies to add and subtract numbers up to three digits. I will send home strategy sheets so that you can see how the many strategies we will be learning are based on the understanding of place value.  We will also cover time, geometry, measuring, graphing and the application of these concepts in solving word problems.
Content Knowledge, Reading, Writing along with embedded Social Studies as well as Speaking and Listening is covered in our Wit and Wisdom curriculum. We have 4 modules, one theme for each term.  We start with The Season of Change, and then move to the American West, Civil Rights Heroes, and lastly Good Eating which covers the digestive system as well. 

Our Fundations program reviews first grade phonics and continues to build phonetic  awareness of rules and patterns for reading and spelling. 
Amplify Science units that are covered this year will be Plant and Animal Relationships, Properties of Materials where the students work on designing a good glue for school, and Changing Landforms which teaches the concept of erosion.

  Classroom Expectations
Your child’s success is very important.  To create and maintain a positive learning environment for all students, I will expect that the classroom rules be followed. For most children positive reinforcement, at this age, works well. I have established an easy to follow reward system for our classroom. However, if a child chooses not to work as a team in a respectful manner with the class, there are some consequences that will follow.  I believe you will find the expectations to be fair and common for every classroom.   They will be discussed at length along with examples given, so that each child clearly understands what is expected from them. 
Classroom Expectations
 1.  Follow directions.
2.  Listen carefully. Do not speak when others are talking.
3.  Work quietly.   Do not disturb others who are working.
4.  Respect others.  Be kind with your words and actions.
5Work and play safely.

Consequences and Rewards 
This year we will be using a strike system to monitor individual behavior. It is associated with baseball in that 3 strikes is not good for the individual at bat or the team.
Strike one: “foul ball”considered just a warning
Strike two : “focus on the game” Stay on the ball 
Strike Three: “you’re out”, not really.  A note will come home to let you know that your child had 3 strikes. 
(Your child is not sent out of the class, unless further disruption occurs.)                               

Each child will start the day fresh.  Everyone has the visual of a strike card( three baseballs) taped to their pencil box. It is there to hopefully help remind them to stay on task and work as a team member in the classroom. If this does not help the child to make the correct choice, they will receive a strike ( where they will cross off a baseball).  The visual is there as a reminder to stay in the game and so on. If they reach strike three, the child will fill out a note as to why they struck out. The note will come home letting you know they received 3 strikes that day and why. The paper will need to be signed and returned the next day. This is done so that you as a parent are aware and may discuss appropriate behaviors for the days following. I will not write on the note unless needed, so that they may own their behaviors and explain them to you.  However, feel free to contact me if you would like to talk about your child’s behavior, or I will contact you if it becomes a regular occurrence. The system is set up so that every child has ample opportunity to have a successful day and so that everyone may have a comfortable learning environment. 

At the end of each day, the students will punch  holes  in a behavior card. One punch for each ball that is not crossed out on their desk.  When the card is full (20 punches) they may redeem it for a coupon reward.  Some examples of rewards are… use the teacher’s chair for the day, have an extra snack whenever you want, chew gum for the day, wear slippers for the day, work independently in the hall, switch jobs for a week, and no morning work.     

  

This plan is meant to create a classroom atmosphere where children make their own choices and are held accountable for them.  In turn, learning can be accomplished in a pleasant, rewarding, fun filled way.  If you have any questions, feel free to call or email.

Homework 
Homework is meant for practice and reinforcement as well as to instill responsibility.  It is in your child’s best interest to complete homework and bring it in daily.

This year we will have math and reading fluency passages Monday - Thursday.  Nightly reading in addition to fluency passages is strongly encouraged.

Supplies
Thank you to those that sent in supplies. It is posted on the Ranger  website if you haven’t had a chance yet.

Our class does have a few ongoing items that we will be in need of throughout the school year. This is only a wish list if you happen to be out shopping and are able to pick up an item now and then.  

Healthy non-perishable snacks - I like to have these on hand in case someone forgets their snack. No nut products of any kind. 

Each child should bring a snack to school.  I stress that these extra snacks are only for an emergency. We do have nut, egg, and pineapple allergies in our room, so please do not send in snacks that contain these products.  Please send in the original container as well so that our school nurse can double check ingredients. 

 

Paper towels- for cleaning up spills and washing desks, in addition to the disinfecting that does not need wiping. The towels that are supplied by the school are not absorbent.   

Antibacterial Wipes-   an ongoing need for sticky hands and disinfecting items like pencils and tables.
